De-Stress During Challenging Times

By August 10, 2020 Wellness Coaching

There are several reasons why our stress can be heightened during this time – you might be working from home with distractions (toddlers, anyone?!) or an essential worker at a busy market. Whatever the reason is, it can be difficult to manage this stress. Covid-19 can cause a lot of worry and anxiety for us. We’re worried about us or someone we love who may be considered high-risk getting ill. Perhaps you have experienced a loss in income. You are not alone in these worries, and fortunately there are some ways you can help decrease your stress level and anxiety.

According to the CDC:

Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can sometimes cause the following:

  • Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones, your financial situation or job, or loss of support services you rely on.
  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns.
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating.
  • Worsening of chronic health problems.
  • Worsening of mental health conditions.
  • Increased use of tobacco, and/or alcohol and other substances.

We all handle stress differently, and what works for one person may not work for you. That said, there are healthy habits you can incorporate in your day to reduce stress and anxiety and clear your mind:

Exercise daily – This does not mean you need to commit to a high-intensity workout. A 20-minute walk around your neighborhood, some jumping jacks and running in place in your living room, or yoga online can be enough to get your heart rate up AND help you focus on your body and breathing.

Meditate – see our tips for meditating at home or wherever you might be. Setting aside some quiet time for this at the beginning of your day may be just what you need to feel calm.

Eat healthy foods – This sounds easy enough, and honestly, sometimes can sound easier said than done. But making simple choices such as avoiding processed foods at the grocery store or considering the 80/20 rule can be enough to make a difference in your overall health.
